It is also possible to plant thorny bushes around a young tree to protect it, or look for plants that deer don't like. I use a ring of chicken wire round trees such as pine until they are large enough not to be eaten!Nick Morganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06431235724349702199noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7432461418078268195.post-41162371485529687322023-01-03T14:33:51.693+00:002023-01-03T14:33:51.693+00:00It is all exciting to consider, makes me think wha...It is all exciting to consider, makes me think what I can do to support butterflies on my property. We have deer and ground squirrels that eat everything, so that is a challenge. I have been involved with a lot of conservation work where I used to live, but it is all on other people's land and always at risk of a farmer deciding he wants to widen a track, spray the weeds or remove a hedge. It is great knowing that the areas I am working on are reasonably safe, at least for now!Nick Morganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06431235724349702199noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7432461418078268195.post-43569305068438069152023-01-02T21:22:33.032+00:002023-01-02T21:22:33.032+00:00Hi Sonjia, Thank you and a Happy New Year to you t...Hi Sonjia, Thank you and a Happy New Year to you too.The Rhododendron really smothers everything and there is so much more to remove. However, I will keep at it and maybe one day will have managed to remove it all. Even once it is cut down it tends to re-grow from the stumps and roots, so I have to chop back the regrowth a couple of times a year. I enjoyed seeing and reading about the changes you are making on your land. I hope by Spring you will be seeing plenty of species of butterflies on the wild flowers you have introduced. Those Rhododendron were also smothering the Holly trees<br />I hope your eye and neck improve. I hope that next spring it will look very different. I was also pleased to unearth the old gnarled Holly Trees.
